What We Do : Focus Areas

Online and Mobile Content

OGE offers technology expertise and localized portals for community and individual development. To date, OGE has launched community-driven portals, called Beehives, in 14 countries and 13 languages. For an example see http://Jordan.theBeehive.org and http://Kenya.theBeehive.org. More than 1.5 million unique
visitors access the international Beehives each year.

The cornerstone of OGE methodology is engaging local stakeholders in a participatory process to identify key
community development priorities, and developing the best-practices content as well as highly localized resources that address those concerns. In addition, OGE works with local partners to disseminate its content through Beehive websites or other relevant platforms such as mobile phones.
OGE’s Entrepreneurship Center, available on each Beehive, is localized to the business realities of each country. The content is used by hundreds of thousands of clients each year and has received considerable positive feedback. For example, in Rwanda, Sosthene Nkundimana, 24, learned how to increase his profits in potato farming, and how to get the funding he needed to grow the business.

In the South Africa Mobile Entrepreneurs program, OGE provides business and financial literacy information to small-scale entrepreneurs over text messages. Thanks to a support from Citi Foundation, OGE builds upon its SMS Financial Update Network in a targeted approach for microentrepreneurs and aspiring small business owners. The project offers in-person trainings complemented by SMS texts and computer center support that help existing and aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners increase their profits, market reach and chances of business success.

In Egypt, OGE’s Gessur Initiative created a process in which software engineers work with small scale businesses to produce online and mobile applications designed to improve business efficiencies. In addition, it offers both application developers and business owners the necessary training for micro-enterprise development and sustainability.
